Niagara Regional Police have confirmed the presence of Metonitazepyne, a dangerous benzimidazole, in a substance initially believed to be fentanyl.
The drug was seized in December and sent to Health Canada for analysis, where it was found to contain Metonitazepyne, a Schedule I controlled substance in Canada.
Originally developed as a pain reliever, benzimidazoles are not approved for medical use and pose serious risks, including addiction and fatal overdoses.
The danger increases when combined with alcohol or other depressants.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers of Niagara.
