Horseback riding is something that not everyone thinks to turn to for personal wellness, but certainly something that can benefit you in more than one way.
That’s where Niagara Riding Stables factors in – as they offer horseback trail rides throughout their property in scenic Niagara-on-the-Lake, something they’ve done in the Niagara region for over six decades. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by Dexter, a friendly feline that sets the tone for your experience for the day.
Owner/Operator Dinah McGibbon says riding a horse is so much more than giving instructions to the animal, as it can help improve your physical health, mental health and emotional state.
Physically, riding can help develop your balance and coordination, and uses more muscles than you may think. Relying on more than just strength, it can help build flexibility as you ride more and more. From a mental standpoint, McGibbon says you will always be faced with questions and problems, which leads to learning every time you saddle up. With research showing lifelong learning can prevent memory loss, riding provides a brain exercise that very few other activities can fulfill.
Emotionally is where riding a horse can really have an impact for many, as it’s often built on trust and companionship with the animal while riding. Dinah says while riding can present frustrations at times, it can also be a very relaxing pastime while building camaraderie with both the animals, and the other people you’re riding with on Niagara Riding Stables’ trails. Many feel a horse is somewhat of a kindred spirit in tune with their own feelings and emotions; more so than any human companion.
Niagara Riding Trails operates throughout most of the calendar year, with a short offseason during the winter depending on trail conditions. You can learn more at their website, NiagaraRiding.com.
