Mayors from across Ontario, including Welland’s Frank Campion, joined Premier Doug Ford in Toronto to support new legislation addressing encampments.
The proposed Safer Municipalities Act, and Restricting Public Consumption of Illegal Substances Act, introduce stricter penalties for trespassing and empower police to ban illegal drug use in public spaces.
These measures come with $75.5 million in funding for homelessness prevention and alternative accommodations.
Mayor Campion praised the province’s approach, highlighting the balance between safety and compassionate care for vulnerable populations.
