
RSV typically causes mild cold symptoms, but it’s also the top reason for infant hospitalization in Canada and the U.S., often leading to other illness.
In Ontario’s 2023/24 season, RSV led to over 3800 hospitalizations in children under two, with 530 requiring ICU care.
Now, Ontario is offering a free RSV immunization for babies born on or after Jan. 1, 2024, as they enter their first respiratory season.
Niagara Health also provides the shot to newborns before they’re discharged, and it’s available at primary care providers and select clinics.
