The Welland Jackfish defeated the Barrie Baycats on Saturday 6-4, but fell to the Hamilton Cardinals 13-9 Sunday as they’ve started their 2024 campaign 1-2.
Saturday’s home opener against Barrie was a sellout for the Jackfish with 3242 fans in attendance, as the team raised their 2023 championship banner. They would go on to defeat the Baycats on the strength of a 3-for-3 performance from Gio Morello, who had a home run and two runs scored. Steven Moretto and Tyler Dupuis also homered for the Jackfish.
On Sunday, the Hamilton Cardinals got the better of the Jackfish, scoring 13 runs on 9 hits. Ethan Hunt and Greyson Barrett both had 3 RBI in the loss for Welland.
Next action for the Jackfish is Friday night in Brantford when they take on the Red Sox at 8:00pm, before returning to Welland Saturday to host the Toronto Maple Leafs at 1:05pm. The Jackfish will then travel to Toronto for the back half of a home and home.
