The Classic Rock 91.7 Giant FM CASH FX jackpot has been won!
The game is easy – a caller hears a sound on their radio, calls the station to guess, and if they’re right, they win the jackpot. If they’re wrong, the next caller at the cue-to-call has a chance to win it for themselves.
Just after 2:00pm Thursday afternoon with Jeff and Brandon, Steve Gotts of Niagara Falls identified the sound effect as “pulling a plug out of a wall receptacle”.
The sound that Steve guessed, with help from Joe and Nicole Moore, had stumped listeners since first being heard on March 20th.
With the money being split between the three of them, Steve says he’s got some bills he wants to pay, while Joe and Nicole plan on spending a lot of it on their children.
With thousands of calls over the course of a few months, and the accuracy needed to be caller number 10, getting on the radio to actually guess is a challenge by itself.
Joe says they had a strategy though, which often involved stopping what they’re doing.
Giant FM Program Director Dave Devine says the $14,400 jackpot is the largest cash prize in Niagara radio history. In addition to the cash, additional prizes were added including a $100 gift card to Country Corner Market, and two free pizzas from Pie Guys.
Originally capped at $15,000, with one winner early in the contest winning $1,100, Giant FM’s parent company My Broadcasting Corporation added some extra stakes – $500 more if the Toronto Maple Leafs won Game 6 of the first round playoff series against the Boston Bruins. The Leafs won 2-1, so the final jackpot rose to $14,400.
The giveaway also led to some unexpected calls for a local business. Mike Kasm, who works at Bardon Supplies in Welland, has a phone number almost identical to ours, and says he’s had quite a few people dialing the wrong number.
One of the business lines for Bardon Supplies is 905-732-6197, while the number for Giant FM’s studio line is 905-732-6917. Kasm says he’s had calls in the past from people thinking they were going to be on the radio, but nothing like he’s seen recently with the Cash FX jackpot as high as it was.
Devine thanks everyone who played along and adds: “Just wait till you see what’s coming next”.
