Today is the total solar eclipse, as hundreds of thousands of people are expected to embark on the Niagara Region to try and get a view at the celestial event.
Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says they’ve been doing lots of planning for months for this event.
Diodati adds that there is lots of entertainment in the Falls as well, which will hopefully lead to the crowd leaving being more dispersed as opposed to all at once.
He says that they’ve learned from other large gatherings in the past in Niagara Falls, such as New Year’s Eve, which always draws a crowd and sees lots of people leaving all at once.
Niagara Tourism is anticipating up to one-million visitors to the area, while a State of Emergency was declared by Regional Chair Jim Bradley over Easter Weekend to allow for more resources to be used, if needed.
A number of road closures have also been announced in both Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, both of which are expected to be viewing hotspots.
