The 13th annual Julia’s Hope Cup is February 17th, with organizers hoping to bring in $50,000 for The Hope Centre in Welland.
The annual pond hockey tournament raises money for The Hope Centre, while also doubling as a tribute to Julia Turner, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2011 at the age of 15.
Organizer, and Julia’s father, Paul Turner says the community support over the years has been fantastic.
The event also hosts a silent auction, has food available for any attendees and typically can see as many as 1000 people throughout the day.
Turner says at the end of the day, it’s a great chance to hang out with loved ones during the Family Day long-weekend, all for a good cause.
While the tournament is traditionally played on a pond, temperatures haven’t always cooperated over the years. Turner says if the pond is all water, they’ll shift to a road hockey tournament.
In 2023, The Hope Center had over 19,000 visits to their food bank and served over 32,000 community lunches to help the most vulnerable in our community. Donations can be made here.
