St. Catharines Mayor Mat Siscoe addressed concerns about the former YMCA building at 25 YMCA Drive amid ongoing budget deliberations.
City staff explored the potential use of the facility for recreational programming, particularly the pool space, with property owner Atria Development.
After months of discussions, Atria presented a proposal with annual costs exceeding $5.5 million, representing a nearly 4.7% property tax increase.
The facility didn’t meet accessibility design requirements, and the decision not to proceed was supported by an 11-1 vote by Council on October 16th, 2023.
