ST. CATHARINES – St. Catharines City Council heard a familiar issue come up in this weeks meeting, and Mayor Mat Sisco was not leaving the table without a solution.
The Private Alexander Watson statue has been displayed outside of City Hall for nearly 140 years, acting as a memorial for the North-West Rebellion
Council vote passed last night 12-1 in favour of decommissioning the statue.
Mayor Sisco highlighted multiple options, including moving the monument to Victoria Lawn Park Cemetery as originally intended for the statue. Another option would be to respectfully bury the monument, since moving it may cause the nearly 150-year-old statue to crumble beyond repair.
He added that a plaque will be added in replacement of the statue at City Hall that will inform viewers of why the statue was moved and provide more background on the history.
